Lake Medard
The Sokolov coal basin in the Karlovy Vary Region is known for its mineral wealth. After the end of mining at the Medard mine near Sokolov, its transformation into a lake began.
The total area covers 500 hectares, making it one of the largest lakes in the Czech Republic. The lake is 4 km long and 1.5 km wide. The greatest depth is 57 metres.
At present there is a minimum of tourists, but in the future it is planned to build all the infrastructure and create an area for recreational sports.
Access to the lake is either on foot from Sokolov along the cycle path and the former railway bridge, or by a trail from the village of Habartov and descending the slope to the perimeter road.
